Partners for the Arts (PFTA) and ӣƵ (ӣƵ) School of Music announce the return of their popular fall celebration, Pops in the Park, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m. at Spirit Park on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. Sponsored by Cadence Bank, the event will feature the Southern Miss Symphonic Winds, with an opening performance by the ӣƵ Jazztet, as well as special guests and surprises throughout the evening. The public is invited to bring picnic baskets, blankets and chairs to enjoy this family tradition. Admission is free, with a VIP experience available for PFTA members.

Pops in the Park will showcase the talents of the ӣƵ Symphonic Winds, conducted by Dr. Travis Higa, performing popular music ranging from jazz, pop, rock, and big band to film scores, Broadway hits, and the great American songbook. Special guests will include voice faculty members Dr. Kimberley Davis and Dr. Meredith Johnson, along with appearances by familiar local notables.

“I am excited to bring this fun evening of music to our community,” said Higa. “We have a great program planned and look forward to seeing some familiar and new faces on stage and in the audience.”

Proceeds from Pops in the Park provide vital support for the university’s arts programs and students. PFTA secures scholarships, mentoring opportunities for students, and the creation and production of art at ӣƵ. Events like Pops in the Park help ensure PFTA can continue supporting Southern Miss performance ensembles and the talented students and faculty who participate in them.

While the event is free, VIP tickets guarantee a shaded seat under the School of Music tent, an expansive charcuterie prepared by Twin Forks, drinks, and the satisfaction of supporting the arts. These tickets are limited and available only to those 21 and older.

“Partners for the Arts is an incredibly important organization in our community which is focused on supporting the terrific work ongoing in our arts programs throughout the university,” said Dr. Colin McKenzie, director of the School of Music and associate professor. “As director, I am honored to have the opportunity to work with PFTA as we continue to explore new ways to engage our community around our arts programs.”
